Purchase guide

How to choose the best roller skate wheel?

Getting rollerblading wheels is really no easy task if you don't have complete control over the subject. Here are our buying tips to help you get by.

The wheel, a key element of rollerblades

Your roller skate purchase is now a few years ago and the wheels have suffered a lot. In fact, rollerblading regularly leads inevitably to their wear, wear that will occur later or later depending on the roller skates. Fortunately, like a car's wheels, rollerblading wheels can be changed. To do this, they have the advantage of being able to disassemble and buy from some sports store and other online sales site offering roller parts and accessories.

It should be noted that the wheels are one of the essential parts, if not the most important, of a roller skate. Indeed, unlike the other parts which constitute it, in this case the shoes or boots, plates, spacers, slippers, axes, laces, micrometric buckles, frame, screws ... they constitute the only element in permanent contact with the ground itself. if there is also the brake pad which, as the name suggests, is "only" for braking. In short, the wheels make inline skates like… shoes with wheels.

General criteria to remember

Made up of a core, an over-core and a small protuberance called interlock when they are made of polyurethane, the roller wheels accommodate the ball bearings.

At this level, you already have a choice criterion for the purchase of your wheels, when we know in particular that some, in plastic (PVC), are offered at the low end and offer a quality of glide that leaves much to be desired. , while the polyurethane (thermoplastic polymer composite) wheels are of much better quality. We can also find wheels wrapped in a pneumatic device in all-terrain skating.

But the material is not everything, because there are many other determining factors for the choice of this or that wheel:

  • Hardness : Rated in shore A, the hardness of the wheels can range from 70A (soft) to sometimes a little more than 100A. Hard, a hard wheel gives less grip, but more speed, vibration and will wear less quickly, and soft, it will provide more grip, less vibration and more comfort.
  • The profile : the profile of the wheels can be square, as is particularly the case for those used in figure skating, roller derby, rink hockey and roller street in particular. We also find wheels with a round profile in disciplines such as roller slalom, freeride and roller hockey, and with an oval profile, among others in downhill, roller racing or backpacking.

Quad roller wheels

In short, there are a large number of varieties of roller wheels and the differences mainly depend on the discipline practiced.

As for the dimensions, these wheels can have a diameter of 55 to 63 mm for figure skating and dance, of 59mm and 65 mm for roller derby, and of 62mm or 63mm in rink hockey (we invite you to go to our page reserved for roller quad skating for more on the subject).

Inline skates

But it is in inline skates that there are the most varieties of wheels, and the differences are mainly in the number (three-wheeled or four-wheeled in particular) and diameters.

Thus, in speed skating, we will see large diameter wheels, measured from 100mm to 125mm, the plates which can accommodate 3 to 5 wheels and the configurations therefore vary considerably: 5 wheels from 76mm to 90mm, 4 wheels from 100mm or 110mm, or even 3 wheels of 125mm in marathon mode (see our section dedicated to speed skating).

Quite the opposite of inline skating and apart from children's roller skates, inline skates used in freestyle disciplines (aggressive, ramp, skatepark, slalom ...), feature the smallest wheels on the circuit, from 52mm to 60mm, even if in slalom, we will tend to recommend four wheels from 70mm to 80mm in classic and battle slalom, as well as in speed slalom, they will be a little larger (respectively from 70mm to 80mm and from 100mm to 110mm).

Finally, medium-sized wheels exist in practices such as roller hockey (72 to 80 mm), roller touring or downhill (80 to 90 mm).
