An essential machine for leveling your surfaces
Indispensable in carpentry, the jointer is essentially used to dress the first face of a rough piece of wood, the facing, which will serve as a reference to machine its perpendicular, the edge, in order to prepare the piece for planing, that is to say - say to its calibration. Choose the characteristics of your jointer
Depending on the frequency and location of your carpentry work as well as their complexity, several criteria will influence the choice of your jointer.
The jointer models on the market are fitted with a synchronous, asynchronous or single / three-phase motor.Each type of engine provides different performance and working comfort by influencing the speed of rotation of the shaft.The greater the depth of the cut to be made, the more powerful the motor must be for better wood treatment by limiting the number of passes.A 1200 to 1600 W motor offers a 2mm depth of cut that is suitable for small jobs.This solution is ideal during the learning phase.A 1600 to 2200 W jointer will increase the depth of cut and suit harder woods.A motor of more than 2200 W will be reserved for professional use by allowing a depth of cut of up to 8 mm, perfect for treating the hardest woods.A comparison of the different existing models will help you in your choice.
The size and material of the infeed and outfeed tables are other important considerations when choosing a jointer. Their total length and width, ranging from 700mm to over 3000mm, and 200mm to over 400mm, respectively, will influence your ability to work large parts. For professional use, choosing larger tables will give you greater flexibility. Some models offer table extensions that increase the work surface.
Their material, in turn, depends on the frequency of your use and your need to move your machine. So a steel table will be much stronger and absorb vibrations better than a cast aluminum table, but the latter, on the other hand, will be much lighter and easier to transport. Noise-canceling lips can be connected to your tables for better comfort.
The different types of irons
Nothing like top quality irons for a professional level of finish. The quality of irons is determined by their size and material. Usually offered in HSS steel, only professional jointer machines will offer cobalt steel irons, recommended for intensive use and allowing better cutting performance. A machine test will help you choose your material.
The irons can be connected to the shaft permanently, thus generating less vibration, but requiring regular sharpening, or vice versa temporarily: more practical, disposable irons can be replaced when they are worn. Magnetic iron positioners will provide more stability and greater precision. It is important to check that the shaft diameter is standard to easily change your irons.
An effective protection system
Please ensure that your jointer meets European safety standards. Your machine should be equipped with a hinged safety guard and a magnetic snap switch, also known as a mushroom head stop button, easy to reach to immediately lock the machine. Consider performing a test to confirm its effectiveness. When the workpieces are small, a pusher will drive it towards the irons without you having to bring your hands together. A recovery casing, which can be connected to a suction unit, will collect chips and dust to prevent accidents.
